“Sometimes the greatest things are the most embarrassing.” Ellen Degeneres’ winning, upbeat candor has made her show one of the most popular, resilient and honored daytime shows on the air. (To date, it has won no fewer than 31 Emmys.) Seriously… I’m Kidding, Degeneres’ first book in eight years, brings us up to date about the life of a kindhearted woman who bowed out of American Idol because she didn’t want to be mean. Lively; hilarious; often sweetly poignant.
I love Ellen. I really enjoyed her previous book The Funny Thing Is … and this one was no exception. In Seriously … I’m Kidding, Ellen talks about her marriage to Portia, and intersperses a few short chapters and funny essays.
I wouldn’t say that I laughed through the entire book–perhaps it was because I read it in one sitting. Maybe if I had come back and read a few stories each day, I would have found them more humorous. I found myself smiling throughout the entire book, but there were really only a few laugh out loud moments for me (seriously, the story about Portia and the soap had tears in my eyes!).
The thing I love about Ellen is her positivity. That’s the reason I smiled throughout the whole book – it’s hard not to stay positive while reading it. Much like the Awesome books, Ellen’s books have the ability to turn your bad day upside down.
While not as good as her previous efforts, I still believe that Seriously … I’m Kidding is worthy of any bookshelf, just for those days when you need a pick me up.
Ellen has such a great gift of comedy that it’s hard not to like and recommend everything she does. I may “read” this again as an audiobook. I enjoyed the last one so much that I’m sure this one would be just as great in another form.
