Anne from Creativity’s Corner and I LOVE a good challenge. So when we saw the dates dwindling down for 2012, we KNEW we had to come up with something awesome for the new year. Thus, the 2013 Book Bingo Reading Challenge was born!
When we thought about all the things we wanted to include in this challenge, we ended up making a list:
- Reading the books in our TBR pile
- Re-reading some books
- Reading some new books
- Reading books that EVERYONE but us has read
- Reading books from series that we have started & have been neglecting
In order to keep track of everything, we came up with a fancy, schmancy scoreboard:

Of course, a challenge isn’t really a challenge unless there are some rules and guidelines:
- Be awesome. If you’re not, this isn’t going to work.
- The challenge runs from January 1 to December 31, 2013.
- If you want to participate, you can join in any time of the year! Feel free to write up a blog post with the rules linking back to my and Anne’s blog in your sign-up post.
- If you read one book for the “1 book” in any category, you can’t change it later on when you read another book to “2 books.” Once a square is crossed off, it’s crossed off for good! (Feel free to print off the scoreboard to keep track!)
- Books read for one square are for that square ONLY and cannot be counted towards another category. This is all about reading ALL THE BOOKS.
- The FREE SQUARE isn’t really a free square. In order to cross it off, you must read a book by either:
- Reading a book picked by another participant, or
- Reading a book in a genre picked by another participant.
- You can start your board over again, but ONLY if you receive the stamp of awesome by completing a blackout. The “winners” of the challenge will be the ones who achieve the most winning combinations by the end of 2013.
- You can feel free to post your reading list for each category, though it’s not a requirement.
- Having a blog or writing reviews for books read is not required. So long as you want to have fun, you can participate!
- This isn’t a race, but don’t be afraid to rub your reads in the other player’s face. This will be seen as encouragement. Feel free to use the hashtag #2013BookBingo on Twitter!
While you can definitely “win” by the boring ol’ vertical or horizontal (or diagonal!) lines, the best ways to win are as follows:

Like it says in the guidelines, the ONLY way to start a new board is to become the SUPER READER! The goal is to read ALL THE BOOKS! To be a winner (thus, to become the awesomest reader around), you’ll want to accomplish as many wins as possible!
UPDATE: I had a question about when we will post updates for the challenge, so I decided that every 3 months I will post an update here and all participants can link to their own updates. Tentatively, an update post will go up April 1st, July 1st, October 1st, and December 31st.
Will you participate in this challenge? Do you have what it takes to become a super reader?

This is such a cool idea!
I STILL haven’t decided if I’ll join any challenges next year but if I do, this might be one of them
I hope you can join us, Vicky!
I love the sound of this! You and Anne have come up with such a clever, new challenge, interesting challenge and though I’m not signin up just yet, as soon as I’ve worked out what I’m doing (don’t want to challenge myself too much otherwise I might explode) I’ll be back. Seriously, awesome challenge. So smarty pants! Did I mention I love this? I do!
Thanks, Rebecca! I hope you can join us! The beauty of this challenge is that the minimum amount of books you need to read to “win” is only 5! Totally doable!
Well hello fun new challenge. I think this sounds like fun! I am in. Will post about it in early January!
Awesome! I’m glad you’re participating, Kim!
I’ll definitely be participating. What’s one more challenge, right? Such a cute idea!
I love ALL the challenges! I’m glad you’re going to participate, Megan!
This sounds like so much fun! I don’t really do any challenges besides the Goodreads one, but I can’t wait to see everybody’s progress!

What a brilliant challenge. I have written up my post and am ready to start on January 1st. Great idea, thanks.

Awesome! Thank you for participating.
This sounds like an awesome challenge, I can’t wait to sign up! It’s like a combination of a bunch of challenges, haha. I can combine this with another challenge as well, since it’s a TBR Pile challenge. How are we going to be keeping track?
You can definitely combine it with another challenge! I updated the post above and there will be an update post on this blog every 3 months where participants can link to their update, or comment on their update. I suggest printing off the scorecard to keep track!
I am absolutely in! Bring on the TBR pile! Where do I sign my year away?
Yay! Like we need any encouragement to read the books, right?
Exactly! I’d be lost without my books! Guess I’d better get my tuckus in gear and get my blog up so I can contribute! No pressure or anything? Right?
You convinced me, I’m joining! This sounds like so much fun!!
Yay! I’m happy you’re joining, Kelsey!

HOW FUN!!!!!!! So, I want to make sure I understand this. I read one book, cross off One Book square. I therefore need to read Two more books to cross off Read Two Books square, and so? So, I need to read 15 books total for each column?
This is SO cool, ladies. One of the most inventive challenges I’ve ever seen.
Yes! You nailed it! I’m glad you might participate!
This sounds really cool!
But i’m kind of confused…
If I say… read 5 books from my TBR pile do I cross out the whole entire TBR row?
Or am I wrong about this?
Good question! In total, say for the TBR column, you’d need to read 15 books total. To complete the entire board, you would have to read 73 books total!
Make sense?
Yeah! Thanks! XD
Ok so I would sign up for this challenge just for the fact that this post made me giggle like a loon. But seriously, what a freaking awesome, unique, fun idea!
Hee hee … we like that we made you giggle!
This challenge is very funny but I think I didn’t understand a few things… Let’s make an example: I start the challenge reading a book that is part of a series. Then I put a x on that square. After that, what can I do? I must go on the “read 2 books line” or I can read, for example, one book every one but me has read? And to win, what I have to do? X all the squares, reading 75 books?!
You can “win” the Bingo however you’d like to! If you only want to complete a few columns — say, the TBR column and new book column — then that’s up to you. To become the “super reader,” you would have to read a total of 73 books. But really, we see it as a personal challenge, so the amount you want to accomplish is completely up to you!
Does that help?
Okay, I already joined 3 challenges and I regret that I haven’t seen this one before, but now I’m wondering if I should participate anyway. Can I use books in other reading challenges for this one?
Let’s say:
Or do I really have to read seperate books for the challenge?
I’m also a participant in the Dystopian reading challenge. When I read a book there that everyone has read but me, can I also use that book to cross of a square here?
Yes! Books from other challenges CAN be used towards this challenge.
I’m glad you’ll be participating!
That is great news! I will make a sign-up post today
Awesome!
I love this!! It’s super awesome and I’m definitely going to do it! I have such a pile of books in my closet that need to be read!
I’ll get a post up for it as soon as I can!
Yay! Thanks for participating, Jenn!
I have this spotlighted for my Sunday Post on the 16th, i am totally loving this challenge
Thank you, Kim – and thanks for the upcoming share!
Sounds like such fun – Will participate!

What an absolutely AWESOME challenge!! I’m on board!
-Jac @ For Love and Books
That’s awesome! Thanks for joining, Jac!
What a super creative reading challenge! I’m in!
This is going to be so much fun!
*throws bingo chips in the air*
Yay! I’m glad, Christine! Don’t throw all your Bingo chips — you’ll need those!
Ooh, this sounds like fun! Although I do find it a bit daunting that the goal is “to read ALL THE BOOKS!” but all of the ways to win involve re-reading 6 books (at a minimum)! I don’t know if I could keep up with ALL THE BOOKS while also re-reading that many. In fact, I think I’ve only re-read one book, ever. (Unless you count reading the physical books and then also listening to the audiobooks, because I’ve done that twice with the Wheel of Time books and countless times with the Harry Potter books!)
In any case… I think I might still join up.
Well, technically, the “Ways to Awesome” are the hardcore ways to win. You can also complete a few lines! It’s really more of a personal challenge, so whatever winning combo you’d be up for, I’d say go for it!
And audiobook rereads are a definite yes! I’m planning to “reread” the rest of the Harry Potter series via audiobook.
I hope you can still join us!
Yes, I will definitely join (as soon as I get a chance to prep up a blog post, etc)!
It’s weird, because if I listen to an audiobook as my first experience with a book, I consider it “read” once I’m finished with it. But for some reason I don’t say “I’ve read all the Harry Potter books 3 times” because I’ve listened to them on audio twice after reading the physical books. Why is that? It’s like, I think it only counts if I read the words on paper? I don’t know. Maybe I should just change my way of thinking!
My husband doesn’t think that listening to audiobooks is actual reading. I think it is! Though, I don’t do as much “rereading” through audiobooks as I’d like to. Yay for joining!
This is so VERY cool. And…now that I’ve seen that books used for other challenges can count…I’m definitely going to be in. Will put together a sign up post. Is there a linky to join….or does my just saying I’m joining here in the comments count?
Awesome! Thanks for joining! There is no linky (due to WordPress), but you can definitely add your start-up post link to the comments, or ping back to this post!
Forgot to post my link: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2012/12/2013-book-bingo.html. I will post updates, but I will also keep track of all the books at the signup link.

Bingo + Books = The definition of fun. Thanks so much for hosting this!
Here’s a link to my ‘Challenges’ page. I posted the button, board and ‘ways to win’ there:
http://ellabeereads.blogspot.com/p/challenges.html
This really is one of those challenges that makes it impossible for me to wait until 2013!!
I’m glad you’re participating! And you’re right — I can’t wait for 2013 so I can start my board!
Crazy, evil, and fun. No never mind I’m already doing 5 challenges, but will sign up anyways. The series ones don’t have to be all one series, do they (like the 5 books in a series)? They can mix and match (like a harry potter, Beautiful Creatures, ASOIAF, etc)?
Yay! You can never have too many challenges, amirite?
And yes! For the series column, it must be a series book — not an entire series! That’d just be nuts!
Yay! This sounds fun, Count me in.
Awesome!
This is such an awesome challenge! I can’t wait to get started
Just a quick question though – each book only counts for one square though right? So if I reread Across the Universe, I could have the 1 reread stamp but couldn’t count AtU in any other square?
Thanks for joining! And yes, books can only be used once, they can’t crossover into other columns.
So they count in the same column? That’s great!
little worried about a couple of the columns but I’ll be back with a link!
Great! And no worrying – just have fun!
I *may* participate in this challenge, just because the concept for it is AMAZING. I love the creativity you guys! And I love a good challenge…
Thanks, Alexa … I hope you can participate!

Glad you’re participating!
Oh this looks like fun. If I am understanding it right, to complete any column you would have to have read 15 books. So a total blackout would be 75 books?
YES! 73 books, actually, since the free square only requires one to read ONE book.

How do we turn in our “scorecard”?
I think the scorecard will be more of a personal accomplishment, since there are no prizes or anything. I plan to post up a progress report every 3 months, so you can link to your progress OR you can tell other participants in the comments how you’re doing. Thanks for participating!
Oh, and yes, at minimum, you really only need to read 5 books to win, OR you could go all the way and read 73! It’s for readers of all sizes.
I am signing up for this one… it is the bingo card that did it.

Awesome! I’m glad you’re participating!
I’m in! Here is my sign up post http://topchochanbooks.blogspot.com/2013/01/book-bingo-2013-sign-up.html But I have to say I’ve never played bingo, so I’m a little bit confused about those “winning combinations”… so we aim to fill the whole board? Does it matter in what order we cross the squares?
Thanks for signing up! You can win just by completing a line — or you can complete a few lines, the square, the x, or the blackout. Any which way you choose!
Thanks for explaining it!
Not a problem!
I read a book for the “1 book in a series” square but it only has a sequel. Does that mean that I can’t get all 5 of those squares this time around, that I have to shoot for something else?
I’m not sure what you’re asking — for the series column, it can be ANY series book, like book 1 in this series, and book 6 in that series, etc. It just has to be A book that’s part of a series. If the square says “read 5 books in a series,” they don’t have to be from the SAME series — just series books. Does that make sense?
Oh, haha, I never thought of it like that. Okay, I was afraid that I ruined my chances at getting that row because I didn’t pick right
Thanks.
This is going to be a lot of fun! I’m In!
That’s great! Thanks for joining!
Pretty neat challenge – I think I am joining in
Awesome!
This is a great challenge and I am in! Just have one question about the column ‘read books everyone but me has read’ – are we talking about a really popular book (eg. Harry Potter or To Kill a Mocking Bird) or is there some way of determining which books ‘everyone’ has read?
I think that’s a column where you can use your own discretion. For example, there are books that it seems like all the blog followers I follow have read — at least, most of them. Then, there are books that are classics, or books that just seem to have a LOT of reviews on Goodreads. For me, I’m basing a lot of my picks for that category on books that all of my blogging friends have read. Hope that helps!
Thank you, that makes things much clearer
You’re welcome!
I have a question about “winning”. It says that the winners are the ones who get the most winning combinations, but you only start a new board if you do the super reader. Does that mean that if you’re going for the super reader, it’s better to first do a line, then turn that into an X, etc. rather than just filling it in at random? Or does getting the super reader only count for one “win”?
I think I may have worded that wrong … I think, ultimately, you can go for whatever win you want. It’s really more of a personal challenge. If you want to go for the super reader, go for it! I know my challenge right now is to get some lines, to work my way to the x, or the x with a square, and then to the super reader, ultimately starting a new board.
Does that help at all?
That clarifies things a bit! I may focus on the competitive aspects of challenges a little more than is healthy…
Ha ha … that’s the spirit!
I’m in – signup post is here. I didn’t mention it in the post – not sure if I have to – but I plan on completing it by making the first letter of my name “T” and then maybe lowercase if I have time.
Question about the free square – we have to do something from another participant – how are we going to know what the other participants are reading?
Yay! I’m glad you’re participating!
For the free square, you can look for a recommendation from someone else who is participating — they can pick a book from your reading list, OR a particular genre for you to read. I hope this helps!
I am really looking forward to this challenge! You can see my post about it at http://series-ouslyaddicted.blogspot.com/2013/01/anne-kristilyns-2013-book-bingo-reading.html Thanks for hosting!

I am imagining myself going for Super Reader because I want that stamp of Awesome on my blog. LOL! But it’s a mighty big reach mostly because I don’t see myself re-reading 15 books in 2013. Which is a bummer because that last column is in all the cool shapes.

This sounds fun – if I were to sign up now, could I use books I’ve already read since 1 Jan to count for the challenges, or would it only count from the sign up time? I probably won’t get too far in the re-read section like a lot of others have said.
Definitely! The challenge goes from January 1st to December 31st, so of course you can use books read within that time frame, regardless of when you sign up!

Yes! You can definitely include all the books you’ve read so far this year!

Just to clarify: the category on “part of a series”, for the multiples (ie 3 books), are they all to be from the same series? or can they be 3 books by 3 different authors, each of which is part of a series?
They can be ANY series book! We’re not picky.

Awesome … good luck!
OK, so I’ve just completed my primary blog challenge of the year – reading and blogging 52 books for charity. I only discovered this challenge when looking at the blog of a friend. Can I join now, and cross off squares as applicable, even if I read them earlier this year? Or do I have to start from the beginning, starting now, in May? Cause then I think I’ll have to wait until next year to participate, and I’d hate for that to happen.
Oh, who am I kidding? I’m going to join up, and start from the beginning – starting now on the 16th of May. I looked through the list of books I’ve read so far this year, and could fill nearly the whole card. Hence, for it to become a proper challenge, I have to start fresh. Here’s a link to my announcement post on my blog: http://kingmagu.blogspot.com/2013/05/new-reading-challenge-book-bingo.html
Of course you can join! And feel free to use all the books you’ve read so far this year!
No, I decided that would be far too easy, and remove much of the challenge element. So I’m starting from scratch. I’ve already filled one bingo square – “Read 1 book that’s part of a series”.
Well there’s nothing wrong with a challenge!
Good luck!

I’ve managed another square: http://myreadersblock.blogspot.com/2013/06/book-bingo-square-20.html
Only five more squares to go and the card will be covered!
Awesome job, Bev!!
